A CENTENARIAN'S DEATH
AX INTERESTING CHARACTER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. There <liod at Seaward Bush on Wednesday afternoon John Stapleton, who was born in Tipperary in 1811. It was not until 1883 (at the age of 71) that he deckled to emigrate, leaving his native land in the sailing ship Treveltan. He landed at Port Chalmers towards the end of the year 1883, and arrived in Southland on New Year's Day, 1884. Most of the time since then he spent in Seaward Bush district. Always a laborer Mr. Stapleton was a very active man in his day, and till * few years ago enjoyed excellent health. Of late his age has told on him and for the last nine months he was compelled to take to his bed. Mr. Stapleton, whose wife predeceased him forty years ago, is survived by a son and daughter and 14 grandchildren.
