PROHIBITION IN MAINE.

THE POSITION EXPLAINED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Melbourne, October 12. Canon Boyce points out that prohibition is still in. force in Maine. The recent vote was only on the question of altering the constitution so that the State Legislature might have power to repeal the prohibitory law if it desires. He thinks it improbable that Parliament will view the poll as a mandate to introduce local option. The voting was so olose that a second count will most likely be required.

A " NO " MAJORITY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. From further information received by the Rev. Mr. Dawson it appears that the issue voted on in Maine was "Shall the prohibitory amendment to the State constitution be repealed." They voted yes or no. The Rev. Mr. Dawson to-day received a further cable from the Rev. P. J. Berry superintendent of the Civic League and editor of the Civic Record, as follows.—"Corrections completed Oc- '■ tober 9. 'No' majority 748. The total' vote was about 124,000." This Tefers to the recount of the original vote on September 11, about which conflicting versions have been received.
