The King gave Lord Dudley an audience and invested him with the Grand Cross of the Bath. Mr. G. 1). Portus, well-known in theatrical circles, was married at St. James' Church, Sydney, last week to Mrs. Maxwell, widow of the late Mr. Max Maxwell, actor.

lA London cablegram reports the death of Mr. Henry Broadhnrst, ex-Labor M.P. He begwn life as a 'blacksmith and stonemason, and became secretary of the Lalbor Representative League in 1875. He represented various constituencies in Parliament from ISBO-1900.

The death occurred at New Plymouth yestprdkiy of Mrs. Smith, wife of Mr. S. Percy-Smith, ox-Surveyor General. Mrs. .Smith was a daughter of the late Mr. W. Morgan Crompton, who was an old settler of New Plymouth, and who always took a prominent part in the political life of the district in the early days and was Speaker of the Provincial Council for a number of years. Mrs. Smith came out to New Zealand with her mother in 1853, Mr. Crompton having arrived! here three years previously. She was married to Mr. S. Percy-Smith in 1863.
