DON'T REBEL AGAINST TRAINING

CLERGYMAN TO YOUNG MEN. Wanganui, October 0. The Rerv. J. A. Luxford, pastor of Trinity Wesleyan Church, and chaplain to the New Zealand forceß, in the course of a sermon last night, addressed th« young men present on the subject of compulsory military training. He stated that it was a perversion of fact to contend that existing legislation on the subject was teaching young men to break the sixth commandment. The spirit of murder included hatred and revenge, and there was a great difference between killing a man in battle and killing him from motives of anger or greed. The words of Christ: "Resist not evil," were spoken of to individuals, and did not refer to what has been called "corporate action for repression of wrong.' Addressing the young men directly, he concluded his sermon with this advice: "Don't you rebel against this compulsory training! The legislation is not designed" to cause you to delight in war >fo<r war's sake. It has a beneficial design, teaching you to love Tour country, and youT Empire; reminding you that you belong to «i nation that has done more for civilisation that any other modern people. It is the nation that has planted more colonies, and rescued more slaves than any other in the world's history—a nation with a passion for liberty and a genius for righteous government. You ought to be proud of her history. You arc being called upon to help to protect that nation and contribute towards the maintenance of the influence of your Empire, and you should respond willingly. While the work of moral, social, aral material progress is being continued by your fathers and your seniors it is your duty to say: "Wo are ready and willing to go into training so that if in the future our country or our Empire lie threatened by an envious or covetous Power, or a cry come to our nation from the oppressed for deliverance, we shall be prepared to take part in the sacred work of national defence."'
