ENTERTAINMENTS

SAUNDERS' PICTURES. A complete new selection of films wilt be shown to-night at Whiteley Hall. Amongst the new pictures is a great Kdison production, "The Cardinal's Edict." The American Biograph are represented" with two fine star pictures, "Lily of the Tenement" and "Te Lonedale Operator." The Selig Polyscope Company's wes-terni romance, "Law of the West" is shown. Other interesting pictures are "Stocking a Great Modern Zoological Garden at Rome," a novelty item "Peculiar Pets," and am acrobatic vaudeville act by Murray and Kindy. The scenic views include "Pleasures of the Sea" and "Vallev of Brathland." The usual number of comics complete a first-class programme. Incidental music will be supplied by the Biograph Orchestra.

'PIRATES OF PEXZAXCE." Last night, in the Theatre Royal, the New Plymouth Amateur Operatic Society held its final rehearsal of Oilbert and 'Sullivan's sparkling opera, "The Pirates of Penzance." which is to be produced to-night. On last night's work the public may be assured of an excellent performance to-night. It is most difficult for the kindest critic to gauge the possible value of a public performance by even the fullest rehearsal, for all players, whether amateur or professional, depend for their stimulation on an audience. It is, however, to be remarked that the company has a true artist in Miss Buckmann. that it is remarkaWy fortunate in possessing so flue a chorus (nothing better could be wished for) and in the possession of an orchestra capable of doing justice to magnificent music. It is noted that in the grouping* the old Gil'bertian conventions are not followed, and much stage space is frequently left awkwardly hare, the crowd being huddled. Only a person sitting in front can be sensible of stage effects. Mr. Bradbury's scenery is of tire highest excellence, and special attention is directed to this outstanding feature.
