DISTRICT NEWS.
• \Frim Our Own Correspondents). I MAKETAWA. Rlill extraordinary weather—so much m>_ t'liac 1 lie- effect will be very marked on the dairy output if a radical change does mot soon eventuate. The meeting of the local Dairy Company held -last week (which was fully reported in your columns) aroused more than usual interest, and the .shareholders showed that they intended to be more alive in future. Apparently, all round the district, if one takert the reports of the different companies' meetings, the farmers are seeking more light into the working of their respective concerns, and such must in the long run have a far-reaching effect on economical, working. I Notwithstanding the mild winter, farmers in various parts have suffered -severe loss of cattle, and in conversation with the driver of a butcher's cart, who travels over a (large scope of country, I find that shortage of feed, failure of turnip crops, and consequently poor condition of stock at time of calving is re-i-'ponwiblc for many of the losses. How about -ensilage, "Mr. Cocky''? The meeting of the Durham Road School Committee was held cm Monday last, but too business of any importance was transacted. The present system of inspection was adversely criticised, the old style of each child's examination marks in their respective standards being the best. Strange! Those things a howl should be made over are passed by the majority and little things of no consequence are made into mountains. !t was ever thus! A very successful concert was held in the Norfolk Road School on Friday evening last, and the splendid moonlight night was responsible for a large number of outside visitors. A very enjoyable pro-. gramme wap suhnritted and much appreciated. The dance which followed the concert was also largely attended. It is to be hoped that the proposed amalgamated School Committee picnic to the seaside will meet with the support it dieserce. ' If so, then Ingle wood's day at the beach will be something to talk I about, and' Stratford (which is always on top in that directioin) may take second place. I understand a preliminary committee 'has been formed, and no doubt something anent the matter will be published later on. The Durham Road concert, in aid of tin- prize funds, etc., is to be held on Friday evening next, and a tip-top programme, is in- course of preparation. Patrons of the entertainments in this school in the past have always expressed great pleasure at the evening's amusement, and it is to be hoped nothing un- I foreseen will occur to mar the pro- I jected function. I The friends of Mr. J. TI. Dombroscki will be pleased to hear that he is -pro- ! pressing very satisfactorily in the NVw Plymouth Hospital, where an operation for appendicitis was- performed.
