The General Federation of Trade Unions, in a circular, declares that hostility to trade unions has been manufactured by interested parties, successfully invoking Government aid to defeat the workers. It ridicules conciliation boards, and says that if State interference is permitted it will be difficult to stem the capitalistic tendency. Much of the recent disorder was the outcome of the inconsiderate action of the Governmen, who were flnrried by unscrupulous politicians. The Government contemplates a dangerous enlargement of its functions.
Even 1 union is urged to send a protest to Cabinet.
THE MT. LYELL DISPUTE. Melbourne, October 7. The Mount Lycll miners had another conference with the directors. Definite, proposals for a settlement will bo. submitted to the men. The terms have not been disclosed, but it is known that the manager gave an assurance that he was unaware that White was an official of the union when he "sacked" him. He took action solely because of the breach of discipline. The prospects of settlement are bright.
