air. H. S. Fitzhei-bcrt, S.M., has returned to New Plymouth. A London cablegram reports the death of the Dowager Countess Seafield. Mrs. S. H. Barriball, of Egmont road, an old resident of the district, died .yesterday, after a long and painful illness. 'A. cablegram from New York reports the death of Mr. William Curtis, the foremost journalist of the United States. A press message states that I.udy Northcote has thanked the Commonwealth and the States for expressions of sympathy. Mr. Gordon Sal way has resigned his position with the National Bank, and will follow fanning pursuits. Mr. I.ogie, of Dunedin. succeeds him.
A Melbourne cablegram reports the death of Major-General Hood, Chief -of the General Staff of the Commonwealth military forces, and cx-Jnspector-General. He recently suffered from nervous breakdowns, and obtained six months' learc, but his death was unexpected. General Hood rose from the ranks.
