Christchurch, Last Night, The band contest to be held in Christchurch next January promises to be of more than local Interest, for in addition to several bands from outside the district, the Kurri Kurri Band, New South Wales, have notified their intention to compete. WOOLLEN MILL DISPUTE. Dunedin. Last Night. A sitting of the Conciliation Council was held to-day before Mr. Triggs in connection with the dispute between Dunedin and Mosgiel Woollen Mills employees and Boss and (ilendinning and the Mosgiel Woollen Company. After a sitting lasting all day the case was adjourned pending the hearing of the Canterbury Woollen Mills employees' dispute at Christchurch next Thursday. Representatives will then be present from all parts of New Zealand, and it is anticipated an agreement will be drawn up as a basis of a Dominion award.

ELOCUTIONARY COMPETITION. Palinerston North, Last Night. An elocutionary competition, promoted by the local technical school, commenced to-day, entries in all competitions being large. There was very keen competition in Shakespearian recitals for both' Bexes. In the Shakespearian dialogue Miss Pole and Eric Lyon defeated Miss and Mr. Byron, of Otiiki. In the ladies' Shakespearian competition Misses Watson and Mumford tied, each scoring 92 points, and in the men's Shakespearian there was a keen contest in the final between Eric Lyon and Byron Brown, resulting in a win for the latter by S7 points to So. Eric Lyon also won the men's humorous recital, with Fred Pirani second. CARGO PILFERING. .Auckland, Last Night. Instances of cargo pilfering continue to bo reported almost daily by importing firms. The latest complaint comes from Smith and Cau.gh.cy, who found yesterday, on opening some eases •f drapery that had been overcanicd to Wellington by the Hiinutaka and shipped back to Auckland by the Mokoia, that goods to the invoice value of just on £ort had been taken from the cases.
