! COMMAND OF THE CANTERBURY' DISTRICT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. It is officially announced that Lieut.Col. J. T. Burnett Stuart, D.5.0., Imperial General Staff, lias assumed command of the Canterbury military district as from October 2 in succession to the kte Colonel Hawkins, V.D. The new commandant of the Canterbury district is a very capable and popular Imperial officer, who has seen a good deal of active service. He took part in the operations on the north-west frontier of India in 1807-98, with the Tochi field force, and received a medal with clasp. He •was on the staff in the South African war from 1899 to' 1902, taking part in the operations in Cape Colony, south wf the Orange river, during January and February, 1900, and .being present at the relief of Kimberley, From February to May, 1900, he took pant in the operations in the Orange Free State, including the fighting at Paardeberg which resulted in the memorable surrender of General Cronje with a large number of men. He was also present in the actions, at Poplar Grove and' Driefontien, and participated in the operations in the Orange Elver Colony and the Transvaal from May, 1900, to May, 1902. He was mentioned in despatches on April 16, 1901, and wears the Queen's medal wdth four clasps, and the King's medal with two clasps. Prior to his appointment to Canterbury, he was on General Godley'a. staff, being appointed Director of Military Operations on December 7, 1910, At present Lieuit.-Col. Burnett Stualt iai away in Nelson, but is expected to arrive in Christchurch in a few days.
