THROWN FROM A TRAP. By Telegraph—Press Association. Reefton, Wednesday. J. A. Moiitgomerie, for many years Government Surveyor in Reefton, was thrown out of a trap yesterday and badly injured.
STEWARD'S SUDDEN END. Christelmrch, Last Night. Flags on the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Uotorua and on the company's office at Lyttelton were flying half-mast high to-day in consequence of the death of Mr. Davis Sturrock, second steward of the steamer. Deceased had been ill for some days past, and had been attended by the ship's surgeon, who on going to Sturrock's room shortly after midnight to sec how he was progressing, found him dead in his bed. An inquest was held this morning by Mr. H. W. Bishop, S.M., district coroner, who, after hearing the evidence of Dr. Edsall, returned a verdict that death was due to heart failure. Sturrock, who had been in the service of the New Zealand Shipping Company for some time, was a married man. his wife living in England.
A CHILD'S DEATH. Dunedin, Last Night. A child named Elizabeth Williamson, aged three and a half years, daughter of .John Williamson, farmer, North Taieri, died after undergoing an operation today. The operation, which was performed by Dr. Allan for post nasal srrowth. had been completed, when the child collapsed and died. 1!<'1)Y POUND IN WELLINGTON HARBOR. Wellington, Last Night. Shortly before noon to-day the. fullydressed body of a man between thirtyfive and forty years old was found floating in the harbor near Queen's wharf. It appeared to have been in the water for eight or nine days. The sum of £lO 12s 2'/ail was found in the pockets, besides a left-luggage ticket in the name of J. .Marshall, also an order for £4O from the Royal Bank of Scotland, Aberdeen, made on the Bank of New South Wales,. Masterton. Enquiries made at Mastert.on showed that a draft for £4O is lying there for das. McGlashan, and has never been enquired for. It is considered that the body is that of McGlashan. and that he recently arrived in New Zealand from Aberdeen. An inquest will be held to-morrow.
BODY OF CHILD FOUND. Wellington, Last Night. The body of a fully-developed male child, apparently two or three days old, was found in a section in Brougham slreci, on Tuesday evening. SERIOUS RERXIXO AOOTDEXT AT WAVER LEV. A serious buvniiur accident occurred at Waverley on Monday morning, by which Miss M. MdMeckin sustained such severe injuries that she is not expected to recover. It appears that she rose early and proceeded to light a fire in the washhouse whilst the remainder of the liimily were milking in a shed close by. By some means or another her clothes became ignited, and whilst trying to beat out (lie Ihunes a tin of kerosene was upset and assisted in the conflagration. Hearing screams, those in the shed rushed up, only to find Miss McMeekin lying on (he floor of the washhouse with her clothes still burning. The (lames were at once extinguished, when if was found that, the snll'erer had sustained frightful injuries. On enquiry yesterday ■morning the Patea Press learnt that though still alive little or no hope was held out for Miss McAleekin's recovery.
