KAISER AND HERO.
Bearing the Imperial monogram, a gold watch was presented last month by the Mavor of Grimsby, on behalf of the German Emperor, to'W. M. Bone, skipper of the Grimsby trawler, Scarborough, for an act of gallantry whilst fishing in the North Sea on November 8.
Bone saw the German barque. Schiller flying distress signals. A great gale was raging. On reaching the barque it was seen that the crew of four had left her and were clinging to an upturned boat. To-have launched the trawler's boat would have meant her being swamped, and the only possible chance was to n o navigate the trawler that by drifting she might pin-s near enough to pick the Germans up. Over and over again the sea swept the trawler just beyond the drowning men's reach. Finally, 'after sev. ral hours" peril..n- elVort. what the skipper acknowledge.! was "the direct Providence of God/" came to them, for. lie said, "just as we were being carried past the boat again our trawler heeled over and we were able to seize the Germans. All of them were in a complete state of collapse. As the trawler righted herself again and swept on the rescued men were dragged through the sea. The tishcrmen held them in their grip, and they were linally pulled on board —three lishernicu being necessary to pull each German up the vessel's side. For six hours -the skipper and hi> crew had to apply- artificial respiration before the Germans recovered.
