SALE OP A LEASE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The lease for fifty years, as from July 1, 1912, of an important city block situated on the north-western corner of Cathedral square and Colombo street, known locally as Heywood's corner, wag offered by auction to-day, and was sold to George Gould, who bid £BSO. The bidding started at £SOO. The conditions of the lease provide that the present two-storey wooden bnilding must be removed before July 1, lftl3, and that a new brick or stone building not less than two storeys, and so constructed as to permit of the addition of another storey, must 'be erected at a cost of noli less than £IO,OOO. The annual rentals aggregate £1'742 {ls, and the rates total £202 Os 3d.

SPORTS PROTECTION SECRETARY. Invercargill, Last Night. Mr. Arthur A. Paape, who has been appointed secretary of the New Zealand Sports Protection League, left by the second express to-day to take up hia new duties in Wellington. Though a young man, Mr. Paape has been probably one of the best known figures ill Invercargill, and he was given a cordial send-off by a large crowd of friends. During the past few weeks Mr. Paape has been the recipient of a large number of presentations from more than a dozen f bodies with which he has been associated, and from personal friends. BAKERS' AGREEMENT. Timaru, Last Night. The bakers of South Canterbury mada a new agreement to-day under Mr. Triggs, Conciliation Commissioner. It is six years since the last award was made. The result is satisfactory to both parties. The chief points arrived at are that hours be reduced from 50 to 48, and instead of three classes of minimum wage one minimum was adopted, viz,, £2 15s, employers to pay better men more, apprentices' wages to be as before, but the term extended from four to five years. The usual union preference was accepted. A DEAN'S JUBILEE. Timaru, Last Night. A large meeting to-night celebrated the silver jubilee as parish priest oi the Rev. Dean Tubman in connection with the opening of the new Catholic Church.
