FASHION FETE AT INGLEWOOD

NICHOLLS AND SON'S PROMENADE DISPLAY.

On Friday night last the ladies of the Inglewood district were given a treat. The patrons of opera had on Monday night at New Plymouth and on the next night at Stratford revelled in a fashion display. Inglewood bad one of its own on Friday, wh.cn Messrs. Nicholls and Son. who have determined to make their millinery, dress and fancy departments equal to the best in the province, made a "promenade display" of the new spring and summer fashions. Great glowing Osram lamps everywhere had their brilliancy reflected from beautiful silks, sequins, spangles, buckles. They threw into prominence all the exquisite millinery in the splendidly arranged showroom, and served to heighten the effect of the costumes, costume cloths, beautiful blouses and charming dustcoats. Festoons of fashionable dressgoods. chains upon chains of new embroideries and laces and insertions, and graceful lace curtains in the aisles heightened the effect. The great gathering of womenfolk strolled round and admired, and the glamor of (he ..orchestral music was over all. To Mr. Rperrinsr. Miss Yandvke and their a«istants flic greatest credit must be given for the excellent manner in wliieh the various departments were displayed, and Mr. Nicholls is certainly to be commanded upon his up-to-dateness, not only in. the selection of the stocks but also for the enterprising manner in which it has been brought under the public | notice. Amongst the most becoming hats was a very smart one, large, in old rose crinoline straw, turned well back from the face, ami the brim underlined with black lace: a handsome jet buckle, I catching up a strip of black velvet riblion which swept over the crown, amidst shaded leaves and roses. The gaily dressed windows had, amongst other gems, a jet toque, with a spray of lovely roses trailed over the crown to droop on to the hair at the sides. Must stylish, too. was the black picture lint, very "correct." white roses rising high from the side of the crown, and Mack lace intertwined. A putty colored .-♦raw. with cerise and royal blue trails over the crown, and a large royal blue velvet bow across the front, attracted lots of attention. There's a lovely range of moire, glace, bengaline and cambric underskirts; of coats and costumes, too; and a choice gathering of the new seqiiinned scarves, while blouses and skirts are as plenteous as they are good. The figure mav be moulded to perfection by the fine lines of corsets on show. There are over a dozen distinct shades in cotton merveilleux, plain and self-striped, and the colors are just about as varied in c'lttnn -hanf img*. Linens and rolling muslins have been well bought. The ilre>s department carries a queenly range of Sicilians, lustres, canvas voiles, radiantas, silk bengalines, chiffon taffetas, lustrines, chefoos, and shantungs. There are lovely trimmings in silk, and embroideries and laces galore. To complete a summer outfit there are sunshades to match the dress and blouse ;goods. The silks include colored Japanese. shantung, chiffon taffetas, and taffetas, and are choice goods. The fancy ■ department will stand a lot of "booming," so lovely are the different styles of neckwear, scarves, throw-overs, lace ami silk lies, belts and belt buckles, pearl and head necklets, laces and embroideries. Curtains, ribbons, gloves, hosier}-, and so on; all the latest goods are showing, as well as fine stocks of furnishings, carpets being particularly good. The shop was well cleared by a tremendous winter sale, and everything now is sweet, fresh and new. so that Messrs. Nicholls and Son should succeed in what they've set out to do—to prove to the ladies of Tnglewood that there's no need to go outside the town to be : perfectly dressed in the height of ifashion.*
