ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
FOUND DEAD. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. Mrs. Eleanor Wakefield, about 52 or o3 years of ago, jiving in South Dunedin, was found dead in bed yesterday morning. Deceased, who worked as a dressmaker, suffered at times from flatulence, and a doctor told her ten years ago this would affect her heart sooner or later. iSiinjce then she lias never seen a doctor, and was enjoying fairly good health. Her husband awoke at 4.45 a.m., and found she was dead. SERIOUS COLLISION. Christchurch, Last Night. About 2.45 ,p.m. to-day a collision of a serious character between a motor-car and a cyclist happened n.t the intersection! off Victoria, Kilmore and Duiham streets. The inoitor-oar, "which was driven by Miss Lcggatt, was coming from Papanui, and at the intersex tioni of the streets mentioned turned southwards into Durham street, to avoid a vehicle which was coming westward along Kilmore street. Tu turning into Durham street the car collided with Edward Knox, a cyclist, who was going northwards along Durham street. The cyclist had almost reached the middle of the intersection when the front ol the car struck him, and the impetus carried him about ten yards, until the car mis brought to a standstill by striking a telegraph pole on the western side of Durham street. Knox was taken from under the car and wad found to be severely injured about the head and legs. The occupants otf the car escaped without injury, but the front portion of the flar was considerably damaged owing to the force with which it struck the telegraph pole, a small portion of which near the base was slightttj" stripped. According to statements of eye witnesses the car was travelling at an ordinary pace when it reached the intersection «f the three streets. The extent of Knox's injuries were not exactly known at time of telegraphing, but one of his legs was broken and his head bruised. 5
INQUEST. Christchureh, Last Night. An inquest was held to-day on the 'body of Emma Henrikson, wife of H. M. Henrikson, who died suddenly between 7 and 8 o'clock on Saturday night. The post mortem disclosed fatty degeneration of the heart, and a verdict to that effect was accordingly recorded. DEATH FROM POISON. Ohristchurch, Last Night. James Crawford, 00 years of age, who was admitted to the hospital on Friday night, suffering apparently from the effects oif a narcotic poison, died at the institution yesterday afternoon without ha.ving regained consciousness. At the inquest to-day, the wife and son of deceased stated that he was in the habit of taking sulphomal to induce sleep, as he suffered from a diseased hip, which sometimes caused him irritation and pain. On Friday morning, about 7 oVlock, he went to milk the cows, but collapsed, and became unconscious when nearing the cow-bails. Witnesses supposed that before lie went out deceased took something to ease his pain, and probably took an overdose. A verdict was recorded that deceased died from a narcotic poison, but there was no evidence to show how it was administered. FOUND DEAD. Westport. Last Night. William Brandon, an old age pensioner, about 74 years of age, caretaker oif Bill tor Domain, was found dead in his hilt yesterday afternoon. Death is understood to be. due to heart failure.
DIEOWNIXG FATALITY. Westport, Last Night. Last night, at about ton minutes to eight o'clock, a man was seen by Thomson, steward of the Anchor boat s.s. Waimea., to fell off a. gangway into the Duller river. The third engineer, who saw the man in the water, threw a. lifebelt to him. but after making a few splashes in tho water the latter disappeared. A ti'iat got out, but failed to find the m issing mail. The police conducted dragging operations for the ;i<idy fo-dsiv. :>Hng similarly unsucoc?,sful.' Xo one .from the Waimea is missing. but Hip s.s. Certie failed to get trace of a llmnan named Itajr-Jiy. whom it is thought must lie tho who was drowned. Tho f.'eriie w.iM for Plymouth last night.
