TOWNS WIPED OUT BY BURSTING OF DAM. GREAT LOSS OF LIFE. By Gable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 2, I a.m. New York, October 1. The town of Austin, in Pennsylvania, with a population of 3200, was almost obliterated through the dam of the Bayliss Pulp Paper Company bursting. Six hundred arc dead. The debris caught fire in the town of Costello, below Austin, and its population , of 500 were annihilated. The survivors are of opinion that twothirds of the population are dead. A twenty-feet dam gave way, letting free 500,000,000 gallons of water. The roar was heard miles away. The town of Wharton also suffered. Practically every building in Costello was levelled by the torrent. Every member of Senator Baldwin'* family, excepting himself, perished. The property loss amounts to millions.
