The Liberte's stock of powder was 125 tons. An explosion preceded the outbreak of fire. Several oflicers perished in attempting to flood the magazines, but the electrical machinery jambed. Admiral Belluc emphasises the fact that nineteen minutes elapsed between the two first explosions preceding the fire and the final catastrophe, the same interval as in the Jena's casd. A first subscription on the Bourse for the victims' families produced £4OOO. The French Press Association has opened a national relief fund. London, September 28. iMadamc Rejane, the French actress, is organising a benefit at the Hippodrome for the Liberte sufferers. Several persons are paying 28 guineas for boxes. Sydney, September 29. The local French newspaper has started a fund to relieve relations of the victims in the explosion of the warship Liberte.
