GENERAL TELEGRAMS

TIJK STRAXDED CAJILA.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui. Last Night. There is nothing fresh to report regarding the stranded Carla. EXCOURAGIXO LOCAL INDUSTRY. Dunedin, Last Xight. The Harbor Hoard to-night considered tenders for a new tug. There were twelve tenders, eight from firms in the Old Country, two from firms in China, amd two from local firms. The tenders ranged from £18,500 to £24,000, and it was eventually agreed to accept the tender of Messrs. Stevenson and Cook, of Port Chalmers, at £22,778, with a proviso that the tug he built locally.

A M.i'SICAL GENIUS. Wanganui, Last Night. The name of Haydn Beck, the wonderful youthful violinist, has been before the public of Xew Zealand and Australia for a considerable time. A large meeting to-night decided to make a big effort to send the boy Home to a European master. Mr. Lewis Cohen related Charles Schilsky's opinion of Haydn Beck, whom he had heard. In his opinion, it was a crime that Haydn Beck was not sent Home years ago. There was not one of the greatest teachers in Europe who would turn his back on the boy. Sehilsky had seen in Haydn Beck potentialities of personality, interpretation and power that were utterly surprising, and which should give him a chance of being among the great violinists of the day. Sehilsky added: "If I could afford it I would take the boy Home." It is hoped that Xew Zealanders will help to give a chance to one who bids fair to bring distinction to the Dominion. A pathetic feature is that Mrs. Beck has broken down in health, largely as the result of her ell'orts to raise funds for her talented little lad.
