Sir George Ranken Ask with, who greatly enhanced his reputation as an arbitrator in industrial disputes bv the manner in which he dealt witli the strikes in England last month, was born in ISIil, and was educated at Oxford, where he took the degree of Master of Arts, lie became a barrister of the Inner and Middle Temple in 18S(i. and K.C. in 1008. He was counsel on the Venezuelan Arbitration to His Majesty's Commissioners of Works and for the Crown in Peerage claims; also Steward of ll.M.'s Manor of the Savoy. He was appointed Comptroller-General of the Commercial. Labor and Statistical Departments of the Board of Trade in 1000. In 1007 he was Assistant Secretary to the Board of Trade (railways), and in 190!) he was appointed chairman of the Fair Wages Advisory Committee.
