Sir Robert Hart is HuiffifiAj* from pneumonia. His condition is causing some anxiety. Mr. R. D. Ooker, of the local staff of the Bank of New South Wales, is Umler transfer to the Ilawera branch.
Mr. .T. A. Quinn, solicitor, of Auckland, died suddenly on Tuesday morning. He had been suffering from heart trouble.
News comes from Port Chalmers of the death of Mrs. R. Bauchop, mother of Colonel Bauchop, D.5.0., late officer commanding the Wellington district (now studying in England). Mr. W. G. Mcddings, late inspector of telegraphs at Auckland, died at his residence, Tawa road,. Residence Park, One Tree Hill, near OneJUmga, on Saturday morning, agd sixty-seven yeare. The deceased is survived by his widow, four married daughters, and one son, Captain Meddings, of Nelson. Mr. Gideon Jamieson died at Awapuni on WednesdaV at the age of eightyseven years. He came to New Zealand from Shetland' in 1877 with his sons, and, proceeding direct to the Manawatu district, settled on the Foxton line, neari Awapuni,-residing with, his- d:ulghter-in-j law, Mrs. A. Jamieson, until his death. He leaves a daughter and three sons, thirty-one grandchildren, and four great, grandchildren. The death occurred at Kapuni yesterday of Mr. Alfred Drake, an old resident of Fitzroy, and well known as the erstwhile owner of the Fitzroy Bacon Curing Factory. The interment takes place at Te Henui Cemetery to-morrow, Mr. Chow S. Lanchu, His Imperial Chinese Majesty's Cpnsul for New Zealand, arrived in Wellington from Pekin, via Australia, by the Ulimaroa last night. He will take up his residence at the Consulate, where tho former Consul, Mr. 'Hwang, resided, and will commence his official duties next Wednesday.—Press Association.
It 19 understood that the appointment of Major Knox, Director of Supplies and Transport at General Headquarters, Wellington, to tho position of Quartermas-ter-General of the New Zealand Forces, will be gazetted this week. Hitherto this appointment has been bracketed with that of the adjutant-generalship, and since .the arrival in the Dominion of MajorGeneral A. J. Godley, C.B. General Officer commanding the Forces, the combined departments have been under the administration of Colonel A. W. Robin, C.8., officially designated the Adjutant and Quartermaster-General. A3 the new defence system has developed, the increasing demands upon the Quarter-master-General have rather overburdened the adjutant-general's side of Colonel Robin's responsibilities, and created the necessity for a rearrangement of the duties, thus bringing the New Zealand General Staff organisation into line with the Imperial system. Major Knox's appointment will, it Is further understood, carry with it the local rank of lieuten-ant-colonel.
