GENERAL TELEGRAMS.
WELLINGTON UNEM PLOY ED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Tuesday. The Mayor of Wellington was waited on by a deputation of unemployed today, asking for work. Mr. Wilford saw the Minister, with the result that he was able to announce that fifty men could be given pick and shovel work at once on the Stratford-Ongarue railway. Others will be absorbed in municipal works under way or about to be started. The position had become more acute as the result of the completion of certain suburlwn mechanical works. EXPLOSION OX A STEAMER. Ouncdin, September 18. An explosion of benzine occurred on the steamer Breeze at Port Chalmers today, by which four men were slightly burned about their faces and hands. The men were Fred Ilolden. W. Harrison, Morgan Cottill and Pat Healey, the lastnamed being injured worse than the others. It is stated that no benzine has been carried on board for a long time, but it is surmised that on a previous occasion some benzine leaked into the bilge and remained there in the form of vapor. The flames which arose were quickly subdued, and no damage was done to the vessel. 'SEGREGATION OF DEGENERATES. Timaru, Last Night. The Hospital Board to-day decided to ask the Inspector-General to introduce legislation to enable the Government or hoards to provide for the segregation of female degenerates, whose illegitimate children would become a burden on boards' funds.
