NAPIER-GISBORNE RAILWAY
DEPUTATION TO THE PREMIER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Tuesday. A deputation waited on the Premier this afternoon to urge tho Government to make a start with the Napier-Gis-borne railway from the Napier end. It asked that £50,000 be spent this year on that line from that end and £50,000 from the Gisttorne end. Sir Joseph Ward said he had already made it clear that the Government intended to go on from the Napier end. The Government was doing its best to commence there, and proposed to tabic an authorisation this session.
In the course of general remarks, Sir Joseph Ward resented criticism of a kind calculated to damage the Government and deter the country from going on with public works. The Government had been subjected to the vilest abuse and most contemptible tactics in connection with the public undertakings it was carrying on. In no other country would they find the cry of stinking fish being so raised. The Government would, however, make proper provision for rail ways and a«cept the responsibility.
