ST. ANDREW'S UNIVERSITY

A RETROSPECT BY LORD ROSEBERY. 8y Cable—Press Association—Copyright. London. September 15. Lord Rosebcry was installed as Rector at St. Andrew's University, which is celebrating the 500 th anniversary of its foundation. Tn his rectorial address he reviewed the history of the University from the barbarism prevailing in Scotland 500 years ago to to-day, when there was some danger of Scotland becoming a spoon-fed nation. He emphasised the growth of toleration and the gradual supersession of violence by law. When he averaged the centuries lie was inclined to take a hopeful view of the future, and was persuaded that there wits a constant movement for the better in the world. Many foreign, overseas and British universities and learned societies presented addresses. Otago University was represented by Professor Sale, and the University of New Zealand by Mr. James Hay.
