Veteran James Campbell, late HM. 58th Regiment, died at Auckland last week. He was born at Kendall, England, in 1824, and joined his regiment in 18411, landing at the Hay of Islands in 1845. With this famous regiment he was engaged at .Ruapekapeka against Hone Heke and Kawiti, and ia subsequent actions during the Maori war tii that district. After seventeen years' service, he toot his discharge, being awarded an imperial and old age pension and Xew Zealand war medal. He joined the Veterans' Home over five year* ago, and remained there until his death.

Sir. Horatio A. Walmsley died in Auckland on Wednesday. In 190-2 Jtr. Walmsley and his brother constructed the first wooden tramline connecting the. bush (now known as Walmsley's Bush) with the Waihi Company's battery for the purpose of supplying firewood to the company (says the Star). About 1809 Horatio Walmsley left Waihi for Vancouver, en route for Klondyke In these regions he spent a year. Thence he proceeded to Canada, and after a short period in that country, he went to East' Africa, and spent some time in the country lying round Lake Victoria. He spent nine years in East Africa The severity of the climate conditions then proved too much for him, and he return* ed two years ago. Since his return Mr, Walmsley, on behalf of a mining syndicate, visited Fiji for the purpose of investigating the mineral deposits of that country.
