ERUPTING FROM 77 CRATERS

Etna is erupting from 77 craters, pouring out smoke, and throwing incandescet blocks 'to a considerable height. The central crater is furiously hurling rocks weighing many tons. The lava is advancing 120 metres (l.'JOvds) an hour. The stream is 500 metres (-540 yds) broad. The railway is flooded with lava and impassable, and a number of villas have been destroyed. The rain of ashes continues at Catania. The estimated damage is £250,000. Crowds of English and American tourists are ascending Etna. Earthquakes are reported from Florence, Vienna and elsewhere. Lava from Mt. Etna has destroyed the fertile district called Imbrophimento.
