PROGRESS OF IXVERCARGILL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Invcrcargill, Last Night. A proposal to raise a loan of £IO,OOO for a gravitation water supply from Dunsdale, 1!) miles from town, was the subject of a poll of ratepayers to-day. The total sum is £33,000, including the estimated cost of the reticulation of the outlying areas. The proposal was defeated"by 891 to 590, only 1305 out of 3000 voting. The council takes this as an indication of the feeling of the ratepayers and will push oil immediately with tiio scheme for extending the existing pumping scheme, which is estimated to cost .-£50,000. MUNICIPAL BY-ELECTION. Gisborne, Last Night, rolling took place to-day m connection with the vacancies caused .by the retirement of Mr. W. D. Lysnar (the Mayor) and Councillor Krank Harris, ami the consequent elevation of Councillor Win. Pettie to the Mayoralty. The result of the election was as follows: ,Ti>hn W. Bright 945, Geo. Wildish 727, ,T. S. Sheridan 073, D. W. Coleman 584, A. IT. Anderson 548, Tan Simson 175, and Wong King 134. CARGO BROACHING. .Auckland. Last Night. At the Police Court to-day John Buchanan was sentenced to three months' hard laihor for cargo 'broaching on the steamer Rimutnka. In the case of Bert Bizard, similarly charged, the Magistrate reserved his decision.
