AN AUTOCRATIC SPEAKER. Sydney, September 14. The Speaker's autocratic rulings in the Assembly continue to supply fuel for continuous bickering. His defence against persistent heckling is that he is acting on his authority, with the added hint that if members persist he will have to take notice of them.
THE VICTORIAN BUDGET. . Received 14, 9.30 p.m. Melbourne, September 14. In the Assembly the Treasurer delivered his Budget. The revenue is £9,142,5154, £175,869 in excess of the estimate. The expenditure was £9,117,212, or £1176,935 in excess of the estimate. The railways surplus is £2(12,210. The State coal mine has produced £15,578. Interest received on advances to land purchase, water trusts, etc.. exceeded the interest payable by £47,822. It is claimed these figures show that there is no Victorian public debt. Oversea trade totalled £38,190,842, an increase of 25 per cent, in three years. The States' production totalled £43,481,777, an increase of twenty per cent. The hank deposits were £17,272,000, an increase of £2 10s per head in three years. The credit foncier system proved highly successful. The estimated revenue for the current year is £9,080,000; expenditure £9,050,424.
