Four thousand Republicans, with twenty field and mountain guns, are awaiting the Monarchists, who arc esfci-., mated to number five thousand, with forty .guns, mostly Maxims. Two aeroplanes are constantly flying over the Republican camp at Chave. The delay in the attack is attributed to the Monarchist awaiting £500,000 from England. RECOGNISING THE REPUBLIC. Received 12, 9.35 p.m. Lisbon, September 12. Britain, 'Germany, Austria, Italy and Spain have recognised the Republic. NEW REPUBLIC IN A BAD WAY. London, September 1. The political! situation in Portugal is assuming a serious -aspect. ' In the late contest for the presidency the Republicans have hopelessly divided, and President Arriaga is now devoting all his energies to conciliating the rival factions.
The probability is that after the formation of a new Cabinet, Parliament will be adjourned. Strikes are seriously affecting the country. Forty thousand cork cutters, lightermen and dockmen are out, and in several places in which the cork-cutting industry is carried on the people are abandoning their homes out of fear ef the strikers.
In some places where violence has already been reverted to, all the. afficial buildings are closed and guarded', and the streets patrolled by troops.
