SCHOOLBOYS' STRIKE

The County Council school children at Shoreditch, Islington and Deptford struck, demanding a Wednesday halfholiday, a penny a week for monitors, and the abolition of the cane. The strikers picketed seven schools, and persuaded the other scholars to join. The police prevented them from smashing the windows. The boys at several North Manchester schools processioned the streets, demanding shorter hours and the'abolition of the cane. The pickets forcibly prevented the entrance to school yards. Stones were thrown at "blackleg" children. The mothers intervened and the strike partially collapsed.
