SUPREME COURT.
MASTERIOX SESSIONS. A PAIR OF WHITE CLOVES. . By Telegraph—Press Association. Masterton, Last Night. The Supreme Court was opened here to-day Wore His Honor Sir Robert Stout, Chief Justice. There were no criminal cases on the calendar, and the Judge was presented by the sheriff with a pair of while gloves. ■His Honor, in addressing the Grand Jury, congratulated the district on its immunity from serious forms of crime. A case was heard, in which J. H. Langley claimed a. sum of £2OO from A. 0. -Levien for alleged slander, in having stated that the plaintiff was a "dropper," meaning that he broke the law by dropping liquor to people in a no-license district. His Honor, after hearing the evidence, nonsuited plaintiff.
Another slander' case was heard, in which F. W. Burliyig, farmer, of ton, claimed £.>ol from T.'Ollivcr, farmer, of the same place,-.on account of the latter having called plaintiff a rogue ami a thief within the hfHrimr of witnesses. The jury returned a veixlict for plaintiff, and atefcrilod })im £5 damages. v AUCKLAND SESSIONS, Auckland, Last 'Night, At the Supreme Court to-day, before Mr. Justice Edwards. a.nd a jnry of twelve. Alexander Mclntyre, charged with theft of a case of tobacco, vn'lued' at £3<i, in company with Joseph FJirman. was re-tried. Eight days ago the jury disagreed, when Mclntyre was tried] before Mr. Justice Chapman, and the re-trial was necessary. The jury again disagreed, and another re-triai was ordered, to take place next session.
