A London ealile announces the death of Mrs. Eamsav Macdonald, wife of the English Labor M.P. ilt is stated that Mr. C. Hall, who has represented Waipawa since 1893, has decided not to seek re-election.—Wel-'lingtou press wire. Mr. W. G. P. O'Callaghan and Miss OX-'allaghan, who have been for a trip to England, .have returned to Xew Zealand, and are now in X'ew Plymouth. They will probably take up their residence here. A Pefcin cablegram reports the death of the Rev. William Hill Murray, inventor of the numeral type, by means of which blind and feeble sighted Chinese can learn to read and write well in three months, using only 30 symbols, whereas the average Chinaman takes six years to master the 400(> ideographs—idea pictures—essential to simple reading, and only 5 per cent, ever learn. An old colonist, Mr. Bobert Pearson, died at Lower Hutt on Thursday, in his eighty-seventh year. He emigrated to Australia in 1554 from Lancashire, carrying on, business in Melbourne as builder and contractor. Mr. Pearson arrived ii* Otago in ISOI, being attracted to tho Gabriel's Gully goldflelds, and subsequently went to Ilokitika, Later on he settled at Waikouaiti, where he resided for many years.
