WAITARA HARBOR BOARD
.MONTHLY MEETING!. The monthly meeting of the Waitara Harbor Board was held yesterday. Present: Messrs. W. F. Jenkins (chairman), R. T. llicks, J. Smith, J. Iline, and J. Rattenbury. Leave of absence was granted to Mr. W.. T. Jennings, M.P.. and Mr. W. Bird]ing.was also absent on leave. THE WOOL EXPORTS. The New Zealand Shipping Company wrote offering to take over the handling and dumping of wool at the port. Mr. Jenkins thought the offer "a bit of cocl cheek," The Board got a bit of 1 profit out of the shed, and the Board's officers were well able to supervise this work. He submitted a suggestion to provide further accommodation for too! by building over the gap and connecting the dumping shed and the Flourniillcrs' Association store. The lease of the latter had run out. The New Zealand Shipping .Company had a lease of the .shed for the wool season. In answer to questions the chairman said the dumping plant was the propcrtv of the company. It would not be a convenience to the Board for the company to take over this work. Mr. Jline said that as a matter of fact the Board could not .prevent the shipping from doing the work if it wanted to. The Board had done the work for a number of years, and it had been a very profitable thing for the Board. But. when the Board rushed into reorganisation of its staff, and said the work could he done by a man and a boy. the company, of course, began to reconsider the question. The chairman: We never slid the dumping could be done by a man and a boy.
It was decided to inform the company that -the Board was not prepared to hand over the control of the work to the companv. that the facilities hitherto •■riven would be continued, and that the Board was prepared to extend the woolshed to give greater accommodation. Captain !ho>np-ou. t-lie harbormaster, reported recommending the extension of the wonlshed in the manner suggested by the chairman.—lf the ShippintTcmipany approves, tenders will be called for the work. GENERAL. The secretary was empowered to obtain a typewriter. The shipping report for August, submitted by the harbormaster, wa« as follows:—.Arrivals 20, tonnage 1202 tons, departures •?.'!, tonnage 1007 tons. Mr. J. B. Roy. the Board's solicitor, attended in connection with some leasing matters, and was authorised to have certain leases executed forthwith.
Mr. ('. F. Dowsett reported that the. wharf extension had been completed and taken over. About 25 yards of metal wouhl be required for the approach near Messrs. Ha trick and Co.'s warehouse.— The engineer was authorised to procure the stone required. The "Marine Department wrote that a return had been ordered to be laid before the House of Parliament showing the cost of elections conducted under the new legislation, and the average cost of'elections in the five years previously.— Information to be supplied. The this year cost from £7O to £BO. There was no election in the previous f.ve vears. '
The ( ('lif(ori County Council and the W aitnra \\ est: "Road Board wrote supporting the Board's proposal to amend the constitution and representation of the Board. The Marine Department and Messrs. Okey and Jennings. M's.'P.. wrote in reference to the same matter. The District Traffic Manager of Railways at Wanpaniii wrote that the work of making -buffer posts at the wharf sidings was in hand.
The Inspector of Noxious Weeds •wrote it reference to weeds on a section leased to Mr. Dugdale.
