BOROUGH COUNCIL (From Our Own Correspondent!. Tho ordinary monthly meeting of the Council was held on Tuesday evening. An apology was received for the absence of Cr. Birdling, who is on a holiday trip to Australia. The engineer reported that the Queen street loan contract was practically complete, that tenders would be opened for the Mouatt street work, and suggested that the Council proceed to let contracts! at each meeting. He also suggested that steps be taken for a larger drainage area. The engineer also submitted correspondence received from the linginoerinrChief, through the Resident Road Engineer, New Plymouth, raising objections to the proposed new bridge over the Waitara river, the main reasons being—(l) That it would a pity to abandon the present cast-iron eylidor piers, and suggested that temporary light pile piers be constructed alongside the present bridge, and the superstructure moved bodily oil tho present piers on to tho temporary one, unless the present cylinder piers are not wide enough to carry • the proposed new strucure; (2) that owing to the cost he could not recommend the ferro-eoncrcte bridge, as the steel girder design, with care, would be sufficiently serviceable; (3) that alterations in design were .required; (4) that a I Oft cart track would be ample in. place of the 20ft proposed, and the hand-rail be dispensed with; (5) that the manufacture should not be restricted to the lirm proposed, but be open to British Empire manufacture. A report on the matter was. submitted to the Council by the engineer, who concluded:—"ln reviewing the various suggestions, the Eiigittcer-in-Ohief would appear to be lacking in local knowledge and the desires and aspirations of the immediate community. The Engineer-in-Chicf should be informed that the Council and myself have considered the case from every view point, and, in fact, almost claim to know it from A to 55, and I would therefore recommend that thin report or its substance be submitted to the Engineer-in-Chief through the local ofliecr, with an earnest request, supported by the whole district, that the plana as submitted bo adhered to."

The foreman's and overseer's reports were read.

The oilicer in charge of the Territorials submitted a list of half-day parades for the 11th Regiment, and asked the Council to advise if it would suit the local conditions.

(The text of this appeared in a recent issue). The borough solicitor forwarded receipted copy of the waterworks award. Mrs. Tiseh acknowledged the "Council's letter of condolence.

The acting dis'triet hen Ith officer reported on what lie considered necessary —that several alterations be made in connection with a water supply, overflow and waste pipe discharge to a residence where diphtheria had been contracted and recommended that the owner be requested to connect with the town, water supply. The Xew Zealand Institute of Architects forwarded a copy of the "Regulations for Architectural Competitions," and suggested their adoption by the Council. "

A large number of enquiries re conditions of competition for the Town Hall were received.

Mr. W. Andrews gave notice of his intention to increase the electric,- lieht plant.

Accounts amounting to £1375 lis were passed for payment.

'Phe supporters of the Wailara Municipal Band will.be sorrv to hear that Mr. T. 'McConnell, bandmaster, liaa relinquished his position and accepted ithe comluetorship of the Hawera Band. Want of enthusiasm by band members is tli'o cause of' the resignation. During the time Mr. McConnell has had the band under his charge u very decided improvement has taken place, a,nd it is a great pity to hear of Mr. McConnoll's resignation.
