The general opinion is that search is being made for Powelka. It is held that it is possible lie hit out across the Manmvntu country in the direction of Mohan, with the hope of getting away on a timber scow or one of the colliers engaged in the coal trade. Tt is stated that Powelka. had been seen a fm- days ago crossing Mount Messenger in th" dirpotoion of Mokau, and this is supposed to be the information that the poliie are working on. AH vice from Awakino Rtates that tlm police interviewed a man who bore a great likeness to Powelka. It is understood he was the man seen crossing Mount Messenger.

It was reported that the celebrated gaol breaker had been seen in the district, hence the search.
