RUGBY SCHOLARSHIPS

THE ALF. BAYLY MEMORIAL. Applications from candidates for the Alt'. Bayley Memorial Scholarship close on September 13 next. The conditions of the Scholarship are as follow: The scholarship shall be awarded annually and shall be open to all Hoys resident in the Taranaki provincial district under the age of fifteen years on the first day of December in the year in which the examination is to be held. Throughout the year of competition the candidate mast have resided in the Taranaki province and must have been under regu- - lar instruction (as defined by the Education Act, 1908) at some public or private school therein. The examination shall be that set out for the junior national scholarship. The subjects shall be: English (300 marks), arithmetic (200 marks), geography (100 marks), general knowledge (100 marks), , drawing (100 marks), total 800 mirks. No scholarship shall be awarded-to any candidate who fails to obtain at least 40 per centum in the aggregate of marks assigned for this examination. An athletic competition, open to all boys who have been nominated for the Alf. Bayley Scholarship, will be held at a time and place appointed by the Taranaki Rugby Union and government by officials appointed by them. The following are me events and standards:—loo yds (standard 13sec). quarter-mile (60 sec.) high jump (4ft), long jump (13ft), drop-kick (45yds), punt (40yds), place-' kick (3 angles). The sports will be held every year on the last _Thursday in October. The scholarship shall be of the value of £lO per annum, tenable .for two years, at a high school or district high school in New Zealand, and will be recognised by the Minister for Education as a qualification for a junior free place, subject to the conditions regulating free places, and the tenure of the scholarship shall be subject to like conditions. The scholarship money shall he paid in instalments nt the end of each quarter or term by the Taranaki Rugby Union. The winner, of the scholarship will he presented by the Taranaki Rugby Union with a gold medal.
