The Government has taken over the unfinished' portion of the third section of the North Coast railway from the contractors, who hnve secured Iwrgc railway contracts in Wcstralia. The Council of the Trades Hall adopted a resolution in favor of an increase in the amount of old age pensions, owing to the increased cost of living.

Representatives of the Seventh Day Adventist? are negotiating with the Government, with a view to the removal of the residents of Pitcairn Island, who number 150. The Dutch liner Van Lin-ciiotcn, from Java, has been quarantined with a case of smallpox aboard.
