Trouble is threatened among the wharf laborers engaged in the oversea shipping trade. A special meeting a few days ago decided to enforce from to-day increases of 3d an hour on day and 4y 2 d an hour on night rates, also 3d an hour increase for handling frozen meat. It is stated that the stevedor have been given no official intimatior : the demands. Some weeks ago the mi:: asked for a conference to deal with the matter of special cargoes, for which they considered extra rates should be paid. The stevedores suggested that they should apply to the wages board, but nothing was done. The unrest is accentuated by the decision of the union not to handle pig iron produced by nonunionists at Lithgow. A crisis will be I reached to-day unless conciliatory methI ods prevail. ! ONE STRIKE "OFF" AND ANOTHER . "OX." Received 1, 0.30 p.m. Sydney, September 1. The stevedores have granted the wharf laborers' demands without demur, and a strike was averted. Hearing of their success, the shed hands loading wheat into a ship demanded an increase, which was refused, and they ceased work. Only twenty tons remain to be loaded, and no difficulty is anticipated.
