FARM AND DAIRY.
KAUPOKOXUI DAIRY COMPANY. The fourteenth annual report of the' Kaupokunui JJairy Cuiupany states there has been a. very satisfactory result of the year's operation.-; in spite of the disastrous fire in December last, which destroyed the central factory, plant and requisites, together with the store and stock. The directors extend their hearty thanks and appreciation to the Riverdale and T. L. Joll companies for spontaneous goodwill and assistance in their time of trouble. Through the help of these two factories in taking all milk which could not be accommodated
at the Kaupokonui branch factories, there was no loss of milk to suppliers, and through Riverdale generously offering to make butter the company had been enabled to take advantage of the good prices for butter through the winter months until such time as the new factory was ready, it was hoped that by the first week in September the new factory would he working in either butter or cheese. Referring to the new store, the report says it is interesting to note that although the loss by lire was heavy—£l9s2 17s (id out of accumulated profits of £2649 3s 3d—-there ' was still .til 44 10s Id more than the company had when the store was first' started, in addition to the building at present in use. at Kaupokonui, and £3OO insurance towards the new store building. The business showed a solid growth, notwithstanding the disorganisation brought about by the fire, and it was hoped this season to distri- I bnte goods severe.) times weekly to the j branches by the returning cheese wag- | gons, and thus inerease the trade con-1 siderably. The year had been further ' notable for the inception of cow-test- • ing in the district by the Department j of Agriculture, and this was to be con-1 tinned. A large number of new members had been enrolled in the Association. Owing to the 'dry season and the diversion of milk pending the equip- ' ment of the temporary factory, the sup- | ply showed a slight falling off compared : with last year, but the number of supplier;; considerably increased, over 200 w\\ shares having been allotted. Market prospects for the ensuing season ! were very bright, and arrangements already made assured the company of good prices. Through the loss of store profits by fire the directors regretted that they would be unable to recommend payment of a bonus on store purchases. During the year . r >2.219,94911i5. of milk were received, producing 1,947.-1 0061bs. of butter-fat. Cheese made totalled 4,788,5911b5. (2137.7 tons) and butter ll!l.7701bs. (53.4 tons); lbs. of cheese to fat 2.3118 and lbs. of milk to cheese 10.38. Average, test showed 3.73. I The profit and loss account, alter writ- ! ing off £1022 !)s for depreciation on properties and plant and a charge of £l5B Is 4d, additions and alterations to stable to render it suitable for a. cheese factory, showed a surplus of £15,244 19s, which the directors proposed disposing of as follows:—lnterest on shares at 0 per cent., £7Bl 17s 2d; a further pavment for milk of a l%d per lb. on all butter-fat supplied from July Ist to May 31st, absorbing £14,045 7s 9d, making the total payment for the season 12.018 d, and leaving a balance of £417 14s Id to be carried forward.
The balance-sheet gives details of the immense turn-over which is done on a comparatively small capital. The paidup a,l| l due'capital is about £20,000; but the assets and liability account shows that the assets total £57,885, being largely in excess of all liabilities, shareholders, bank, creditors, mortgage, etc. The profit and loss account shows a. balance of £15,244 on the year's manufacturing and factory trading operations, and a balance of £1144 on the store account.
RIVERDALE FACTORY. From this it is proposed to make a further payment to suppliers- for butter-fat, amounting to £2170 Is 4d; also pay 0 per cent, on fully paid-up shares, absorbing £247 4s" Id; and place the balance , £56 12s 2d, to the credit of next year's account. The following statistics for the season are given:— Pounds of milk, 17,864,313; lbs. of but-ter-fat, 678,208; lbs. of cheese made, 1,211,726; lbs. of butter made, 245*194; lbs. of milk per lb. of cheese, 9.97; lbs. of milk per lb. of butter, 23.58; overrun, 12.6; average test for the season, 3.80; payments, 11.95.
