EG MONT VILLAGE. (From Our Own Correspondent). Mr. J. Gibson was lucky enough to escape with only minor injuries from an accident at- the Mangaraku bridge last week. The road had been diverted from the old course to the new one. Although it was dusk, it appears that no lights had been placed to mark the deviation. Mr. Gibson, driving In a gig, kept to the old road, with the result that the gig capsized. Fortunately' for ■him, lie kept hold of the reins and was able to pacify the frightened horse, or some serious damage might have been done. The Village cribbage team journeyed to Avenue road on Wednesday last, and defeated the home team by a large number of games. The evening's play was very disappointing, as very few of the Avenue road team turned up, substitutes being played, some of whom hacl very little knowledge of the game. The home team entertained the Village team in a most lavish style at supper. A tea, concert and dance in aid of Dr. Barnardo's Homes was held in the Egmont Village Hall on Friday afternoon and evening. The tea wa3 not largely patronised, but there was a good attendance at the concert and dance. Mr. A. Chong occupied the chair. The concert consisted of a good programme of vocal and instrumental items, interspersed with attractive tableaux. Mr. A. Morton, at the conclusion of the concert. addressed the audience on the object of the work which the funds raised during the evening would help to forward. Afterwards the floor was cleared for dancing. Mr. Chong was M.C. The music was supplied by numerous sympathisers of the cause. The whole, affair, socially and financially, was entirely successful, and much credit reflects on the promoter, Mrs. Matthews, for bringing the scheme to such a successful issue.
The lining of the hall supper-room has now been completed and makes a wonderful improvement to its appearance. The room is now a very, cosy one.
The Village cribbage team added another to their long list of victories on Tuesday night, when they met and defeated by 18 games the Kent road team, at Kent road. Miss E. Gyde and E. Dewhirst annexed the prizes for the highest scorers on the winning side. The Kent Road Club provided refreshments.
