SECONDARY SCHOOLS. I NEW PLYMOUTH (17) v. PALMERSTON NORTH (8). There was a very fair attendance at the opening match of the secondary schools tournament on the Recreation Grounds yesterday, when New Plymouth met and defeated Palmerston North. The game was a very interesting one. The visitors had the better of the early part of the game, their backs playing a fine open game; but the nippy work of the local forwards, who were heavier than their opponents, wore them down, and was responsible for victory resting with the. local lads. Mr. P. Skoglund refereed. Kerr set the ball in motion. Adlam failed to take cleanly, and enabled the visitors to carry play to ihe local line. The Palmerston backs were throwing the ball about well, and the local lads were called on to defend. Kerr had a shot from a free kick, and a force resulted. A scrum ensued from the kickoff. Chapman got the ball, which was transferred to Young, to Munro, to Kerr, the latter being collared by Bruce. The local forwards, headed by Mulloy and Goss, carried play to the visitors' side of half-way. Here Irvine put in a good run. but was brought down by Grant. The visiting backs were playing attractive football, but the local tack- - ling was very good, although on one occasion failure by Kerr to take a pass spoilt a certain score. A good kick by Adlam. well followed up by Bruce, saw the ball out at the visitors' twenty-five. Here play remained for a few momcits, and a pass from Bayly to Box, well I taken, saw the latter nearly over. Box, however, had a free kick awarded him, j and notched three points as the result. jThe local boys shook things up on resuming, and Palmerston were kept on ithe defence, a force bringing relief. A j scrum followed on the kick-off. Pal|merstdn hooked the ball cleanly, but (gained no advantage, and the local fqr- , wards rushing through, Little smoth'e'i'e'd' 1 the full-back, Liixford, and Bayly, followjing up well, gathered the ball up and : scored.
