CONCILIATION COUNCIL.
BUSINESS AT WELLINGTON-. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. An agreement has been arrived at by the Conciliation Council in regard to the electrical workers' dispute. The hours of la,bor fixed are the same as under the old award, namely, forty-five hours per week. The same provisions exist regarding suburban and country work as those contained in the recent carpenters'. award. The preference clause is on similar lines to the old one. The period for which assistants are to serve has been increased from four to five years, except in the case of an assistant who during the course of five years is able to secure a certificate of" competency. In that case he is entitled to receive full rate of wages.. Wages were fixed at Is 4y„d per hour, an increase of halfpenny on the old award, and the highest rate paid in the Dominion in this trade. Why this slight increase has 'been given is that a worker in Wellington at this trade must first obtain a. certificate of competency before he can be employed. There are two disputes affecting the merchant service before the Conciliation Council. The hearing of that dealing with men employed on vessels under 1000 tons was resumed this evening by the Council, but no agreement waft arrived at, and the matter will be referred to the Arbitration Court for settlement. The hearing of the dispute affecting vessels of 1000 tons and over has been adjourned to September ID.
