A London message states ih.il Mr. George .Seifert, Fogwell's hacker, has arrived in London. A London cablegram reports the death of Lord Charles Scott, formerly Commander-in-Chief on the Australian Station. A Sydney cablegram re|>orts that Bishop Grimes, of Cliritttcliurch, has arrived from Fiji, and was shocked at the news of the death of Cardinal Mo ran. In response to requests from a large number of ratepayers, Mr. H. J. Gilbert has consented 1 to nomination for the Borough Council, to fill the vacancy in the West Ward representation. At a meeting of the National Park Board yesterday the following resolution was passed: ''That the members of the Kgmont National Park Board wish to extend to Mr. F. Simpson their sincere sympathy with him in his illness, and would express the earnest hope that he may ere long be restored to his usual health and vigor." Mr. Francis Whittikcr Priest, who passed away on August 1 at his residence, Woolston, Christehurch, was one of the early pioneers. Born at Hull on April 25, 1819, he reached the ripe ago of ninety-two. He was u son of the late Captain Whittiker Priest, who brought the first steamer into Hull. He held a position on the Great Western Railway from 1843 until 1850, when he sailed with hi* family in the ship .Trtvencora for Lyttelton, just fourteen days before the first four ships-arrived in Lyttelton. arriving on March 31. He left for - Okain's Bay in April, remaining there * until 188.'), when he removed to Woolston and resided there until his death. Though not feeling well in the lost few days he was still able to lie about, and was apparently well when he got up on the day of his death. He had taken his full share in local matters, and was elected a member of the first rond board for the Eastern Bays. He was also a member of the first AkaToa County Council, and ' was always very keen to record his vote in .all local and Government elections. He Agaves a -widow, four sons, Frank (Ohrrsitcluirch), John (Little Akavoa). George (Tnglcwood), and Owen (Palmertson North); also three daughters, Mrs. C. Biggs (Taihape), Mrs. J. Symes (Le Bon's Bay), and Mrs. J. Gyde (Tataraimaka); and several grandchildren.
