. MONTHLY MEETING. i The ordinary monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Board was held last night. Present: Messrs. H. Trimble, A. Morton, W. L. Kennedy, A. 11. Halcombe, W. Rogers, W. C. Cargill. J. Young and G. A. Adlain. The Rev. J. A. McArtlmr took his seat on the Board as the member for the west ward upon the reading of the returning officer's report oil the recent election. CHAIRMAN. The secretary, Mr. P. S. Whiteombe, took the Chair, end asked for nominations for the position of chairman in. succession to Mr. Jas. Wade resigned. ' Upon the motion of Messrs. Cargill and Young, Mr. n. Trimble was elected and took the chair. STANDING COMMITTEES. , .' Mr. Cargill move that' no standing committees be elected. Speaking to the motion, he said that the establishment of standing committees tended to relieve the other members of the Board »f spnie of their responsibility, and it also had the effect of keeping them somewhat ip ignorance of much of tlie detail work, of the Board. He considered that it would be better for the Board to meet early on Tuesday, instead of on Tuesday night, and transact the whole of the business' ■Of the Board, instead of delegating much I of it to the finance committee. He explained that he had no desire to reflect, on the past or present finance commits tees, as they hod done good work; but he objected to the system. Mr. Morton seconded pro forma. He considered that the motion, if carried,, would be a mistake. Much of the business brought before the finance committee was of a trivial nature, and it was better that only a few of the members should have to meet to consider it than that the whole Board should be brought in for it. He pointed out that all the more , important matters were referred by the committee to the Board .for dis-' cujsioi). .. .• 'i ' 1 <• , Mr„ Kennedy emphasised that thei wprk.qf,the .fpnipiittee was of assistance to ,the chairman audit® the' Board, ; and ooppideyed that th(j Board would take much longer than the icommrtt,ee did- to transact its business. There was no reason why members, should he ignorant of any of the (.natters reported on by the committee,(for all the letters received were read together j , with .the report.' Personally, lid would! like to bp relieved ,of the work (on the j comihitte'e, for this would cause-him to 'lpse a 'clay less in jit-tending Boaijl meetings.' ' . ' Mr. Adlam. favored tlie retention of tire present system. ■ ' ' ' "Mr. Cargill, in. reply, said that most of "tjie speakers had made.out a case that the committees saved the time of the Board, He ,'sjd not see .that mu:h time was saved Wi the Fiimnoe Conimittee/, which opened an-jl read and coisidered Tetters, and fheij .reful them over again jo the. Board. .That looked like an unnecessary ' duplication, of work. 'Anyhow, the members, were appointe 1 to do this work, was po gooc reason for appointing a lew'of, their auWiber to do it. The. experience of most public .bodies was that ,meipbers took (greater interest 'in ..matters,, bef >re the open Board.'
