HORSE-BREEDING SUBSIDY

A BOLD PROPOSAL. /: By Telegraph—Press Association. Pahner-yton X,, Last Night. The Manawatu A. anil P. Association to-day decided "that in view of the largo amount of money now derived from the racing clubs of the Dominion through the increased taxation imposed last year, the Government 'he approached with the object of endeavoring to get a portion of this sum of money allocated for distribution amongst the various agricultural and pastoral associations by way of a subsidy based on a percentage in the pound on the total annual subscriptions of members paid to each association for the purpose of enabling them to increase the prize money, bo as to encourage the improvement and promotion of horse-breeding, and generally to assist the agricultural and pastoral interests in this direction within the Dominion." AH A. and P. Associations are to be asked to co-operate in a deputation to the Minister. Mr. Johnston, who moved the resolution, said there were 30,000 members of A. and P. Associations in the Dominion, and a subsidy of 10s on each guinea subscription would give £15,000, while the totalisator would yield the Government from £30,000 to £50,000 per annum.
