CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER
END OF A DRINKING BOUT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A man named John William Long died in his bed early this morning in a house m Sages' Lane, off Tory street. An inquest was held, and an autopsy performed by Dr. Fyffe. He discovered a fracture of the skull on the right side of the head above the car. The inquest consequently wa.s not gone on with, the onlv evidence taken being 1 that of the identification of the body. Long had been drinking, and some time prior to four o'clock this morning something happened in the backyard, 'the result being that he wis carried upstairs to his bed. William Francis Dowman, a laborer, h.iR been arrested on the charge that he did unlawfully kill Long. This really means manslaughter, but it is open to the police to prefer a charge of murder against Dowman should circumstances warrant it. Dowman will be brought before the court to-morrow morning.
