AN OPIUM VICTIM. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, Friday. At the Police Court to-day Ah Loo ( was fined £SO, in default six months' imprisonment, for having opium in his possession. Owing to the difficulty of getting the opium, the police stated that the Chinese are now resorting to evaporating laudanum to a condition; suitable for smoking. A WEARY WALK. Wairoa, Friday. t Some members of the Wairoa con-' tingent sent'to the instruction camp at Palmerston North had a trying experience on the return journey. On reaching Napier on Monday they found no steamer, and decided to walk the | distance of eighty miles. A party numbering seven left Napier at 6.40 on Wednesday morning. Two reached Wairoa i at 8.36 last night, but the rest came on | to-day.
