MINING FATALITY
' JURY'S FINDINGS. By telegraph— Press Association, Dunedin, Last Night, At the inquest on Joseph Canon, who was killed in the Kaitangata mine on Thursday, the evidence showed that deceased and others went repairing the damage done to the timber by the runaway. The roof was thus exposed, and it was while erecting a temporary structure supporting it that a stone fell and crushed Carson. The pelvis was crushed, and death ensued in a few minutes. A great deal of evidence was taken ae to the power of the deputy in a mine/ and whether the men were sufficiently warned of the danger. After 46 minutes' retirement, the jury returned a verdict that deceased was killed by a fall of •stone, that the deputy erred in not recognising the dangerous nature of the stone, and were also of the opinion that the deputy's duty should be more clearly defined.
