A FATAL FALL. * ■* By Telegraph—Prees Association. Auckland, Tuesday.. Douglas Manttan was injured by ft fall down the well of a lift and die# yesterday. A WOMAN'S DEATH. Gisborne, Last Night. A woman named Mrs. Agnes Christie, living with her brother at Lytton road, died in the hospital to-night. When seen this morning at 10.30 by her sister-in-law she appeared to be all Tight, but five minutes later deceased was found lying on the floor with her face flushed and apparently in great pain. She wag removed to the hospital, and' died at eight o clock this evening. When found on the floor she told her sister-in-law that she had taken some brandy, but a bottle of lysol was found on the dresser. Some months ago deceased's son wis drowned in the Waimata river, and since then sho has been rather melancholy. An inquest 5s to !>e held' to-morrow.

THE BAND CONTEST. Gisborne, Last Night. At a meeting of the executive committee in connection with the coming band contest this morning reference waa made to the value of the first prize for A grade 'bands. It was mentioned that the prize-money in this branch had not . been increased on account of the request) of the association. Several members expressed- the opinion that the prize should be increased, and eventually it was decided to give a special citizens' prize olf £SO in addition to the first for A grade bands. SUDDEN DEATH AT NGAERE. On Mondav afternoon Olive Louisa, the 10-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Phillips, of Ngaere, passed away suddenly at her parents' residence. Her demise was quite unexpected, and as the cause of death was unknown, an inquest was deemed necessary. After medical evidence had been given a verdict-was returned that death was due to natural causes, namely, peritonitis.
