WAR AGAINST TRUSTS. THE AMERICAN CAMPAIGN. Boston, August 7. ASYLUM IN FLAMES. CANADIAN FIRE TRAGEDY. 800 PATIENTS IN PERIL. Ottawa, August 7. Dreadful scenes were witnessed last night during a fire at an asylum for the insane in Hamilton, Ontario. As the institution was one in which no fewer than 800 patients were confined the work of rescue was fraught with the greatest difficulty.

The physicians and the nurses, aided by the firemen, fought desperately with their charges, the most terrible struggle taking place on the fifth floor, where upwards of 80 dangerous lunatics were quartered. The howls and shrieks from these unfortunates when they found themselves surrounded by the .flames were terrible to hear.

Tlicy violently resisted all attempts al rescue, and it was only by the most courageous and superhuman efforts on the part of the attendants that one by one they were dragged to the windows and thrown bodily into the life nets held by the firemen below.

Many struggled so desperately with their rescuers that it was only after they had been beaten into a stale of unconsciousness that tliev were salved.

Altogether ten patients perished, the majority being dangerous lunatics whom it was found impossible to rescue. A good deal of valuaible time was lost in consequence of the firemen having to break through the heavy wire mesh with which the windows of the asylum were guarded.
