Rough weather on the coast caused steamers in all the northern ports to be bar-bound, resulting in the worst famine in butter Sydney has experienced for twenty years. Received 15, 12.30 a.m. Sydney, August 14. The weather is moderating. Several vessels have left the rivers, and the butter shortage has been partially relieved.
NORTH COAST RAILWAY. Received 15, 12.5 n.m. Sydney, August 14. Sir W. Carmichael opened the first section of the North Coast railway, one of the most important lines in the State.
MURDER AND SUICIDE. Received 15, 12.5 a.m. Sydney, August 14. John Colquit, a half-caste, murdered his wife at Wagga-Wagga, almost severing her head. He afterwards committed suicide. They had been living apart. Colquit was a well-known athlete. A "TRADE" SECRET. Received 15, 12.30 a.m. Sydney, August 14. The Government Analyst reports that the liquor drunk by a man found dead on the street on Ajigust (i consisted of methylated spirits and burnt sugar. POISONED WATER. Received 15, 12.30 a.m. Sydney, August 14. Two men drank from a tank in the country near Shepparton. One died, but the other is recovering. The tank contained rabbit poison. Great indignation is shown that the poison tank was left unprotected.
